We’re happy to announce that Micropsi Industries and the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation have established a new laboratory to advance AI-powered solutions for automation problems otherwise thought to be basically impossible to solve. Our shared goal is to make cutting-edge automation technology accessible to a wider range of businesses. To this end, we’ve created the Micropsi Industries Use Case Lab, located at the Fraunhofer Institute’s facility in Magdeburg, Germany.
As a technology and research partner, the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) assists businesses that want to make Industry 4.0 a reality and play a role in this turning point toward digitalization and automation.
The partnership with Fraunhofer IFF opens up new possibilities for automation in applications previously considered not automatable, said Ronnie Vuine, the CEO and cofounder of Micropsi Industries. “Fraunhofer IFF is not only internationally recognized for automation safety and factory planning but also for innovative automation concepts. They’re a fantastic partner for us, one that can quickly propel us and our customers towards flexible and robust AI-driven automation concepts.”
We’ve already successfully completed our first project: a DIMM-insertion task using a FANUC LR 10 augmented by the AI-powered MIRAI vision system. MIRAI gives a robot the ability to open its eyes and perceive its work environment while performing a task and adapt in real time to unforeseen situations. The DIMM task is complex because the robot is expected to precisely insert modules into delicate slots on a motherboard that varies in its position in the workspace. Thanks to MIRAI, the FANUC robot can deal with the variance and carry out the task.
"For many years, our researchers have been studying topics such as the safe use of robots and artificial intelligence to prepare our clients for future challenges,” said Dr. José Saenz, Group Leader of Assistance, Service, and Industrial Robotics at Fraunhofer IFF. “Micropsi Industries' technology and expertise are an ideal complement to develop holistic, intelligent solutions for industrial production.”
In Magdeburg, experts from both companies explore and develop applications in industrial robotics. Successfully implemented applications are documented through feasibility studies that aim to set new standards in robotics and inspire industrial partners to adopt novel automation solutions.
We’ll also work on custom solutions. Manufacturing companies looking to explore automation solutions for their unique situations are welcome to present their specific requirements to the Use Case Lab. Based on those, we’ll develop an application and write up guidelines — with technical drawings, images, and videos — that help firms reproduce the robotics solution in their manufacturing facilities. As our hope is to foster knowledge transfer, we make these guidelines available to a broader audience.
We invite manufacturing companies to reach out and see what the Use Case Lab can do for them. Schedule a call with an automation expert.
